Esther grew up on a farm northwest of Lindsay, Ontario. She spent many hours in nature and with animals of both wildlife and domestic. Photography has been an important part in Esther’s life. Accumulating photos from her surrounding areas from when she was a child. Now she adventures all over Canada and is seldom without a camera. Subject matter is everywhere for a good painting. Advances in technology have given an advantage to artists. Using many photos taken by herself she works them into an original painting.
Real subject matter is often used to get details right for domestic animals, flowers and scenes. Whether it is the fur, eyes, colours or flower petals, nothing compares to using the real subject matter. There are certain areas that provide a plethora of subjects for each painting. A seasonal journal also helps in keeping the paintings realistic. It is important that the subject matter is accurate to the season and the area.
Each of Esther’s paintings has a lot of thought and planning. Many hours are spent in getting to know the subjects to prevent mistakes. These are the challenges for many artists. Each painting begins with a detailed drawing which is transferred to either a prepared board, canvas or paper depending on the medium used for the paintings. Esther paints to bring awareness of the beauty and wonders surrounding us and to bring joy to her viewers and customers.
