Lindsay Gravelle

Lindsay Gravelle is a potter based in the Kawartha Lakes. She has been making and teaching pottery for over 7 years and has worked as a studio facilitator and technician with organizations like Inspirations Studio in Toronto, Ontario, The Toronto School or Art, and Toronto Potters Studio. She began with a foundation in Studio Art from the University of Western Ontario (2009) followed by specialized studies in ceramics at Sheridan College (2019). She has a Masters of Education in Adult Education and Community Development from OISE. Clay can heal and inspire, and a pottery studio is a wonderful space for community engagement and transformative learning.

Lindsay Gravelle’s ceramics combine elements of wheel throwing and hand building and often incorporate illustrations and glaze decorations. Pulling on her background in fine art, Lindsay uses sgraffito, and underglaze and glaze painting to animate the surface and add depth by multilayering slips and glazes. Using images inspired by family and found photographs and collected pop culture ephemera, each piece is intended to evoke a hazy memory, an emotion, or a relation to the ceramic object beyond its use value. Exploring clay and glaze chemistry is a large part of her practice and this allows her to push the materials to their limits and play with the illustrations – obscuring some details and imagery – evoking fading memories that stand in contrast to the permanence of the ceramic object.
