Sydney Martin
I’m Sydney Martin, a visual artist based in Kawartha Lakes, Ontario. I completed my Bachelor of Fine Art at OCADU for Drawing and Painting with a minor in Photography(2019), along with my Diploma for Floral Design at the Canadian Institute of Floral Design (2024). My artwork is focused on painting, collage, photography and jewelry making. My inspiration comes from noticing unexpected beauty in the world around me, centring my work in the themes of nature, flowers, architecture, light/shadows and reflections. I find myself drawn to things like window and water reflections, overgrown spaces, and the construction/ deconstruction of buildings.
For the past few years I’ve been working on a project that combines miniature acrylic paintings and jewelry pendents into wearable art pieces. These small paintings have magnetic backings making them interchangeable within the pendent, so you can easily switch out the art piece for more options. In my art practice I tend to follow the process of capturing my surroundings (photography), rearranging the composition (collage), and then simplifying the images through shape and color (painting). My goal is to continue to acknowledge the beauty in world around me and create art that brings people joy and opens their imaginations.
