Matsu Jewellery Studio
Born and raised in Toronto, Canada, Jennifer Shigetomi - the creative force behind Matsu - initially pursued an education in fine arts at the Ontario College of Art and Design.
Although the 4 years at OCAD fuelled her artistic drive, she realized she had a technical side that needed an outlet. After exploring evening courses in wax carving for jewellery, Jennifer discovered that she had found a medium which balanced her interest in both artistry and technique. She enrolled in the three year goldsmith program at George Brown College in Toronto.
The technique of lost wax casting is used for Jennifer's jewellery collection. Her original designs are carved from wax and then cast into sterling silver and gold. Being able to carve the designs in wax allows a certain freedom with shape and form. Her design aesthetic is clean lines with soft movement and gentle curves in the piece. A satin(brushed) finish is applied to most pieces and then accented with high polished edges.
Alongside business partner and sister Lisa, Matsu Jewellery Studio has been in operation since 1996. Their jewellery collection can be found in stores and galleries in Canada and the United States.
